I got a bonus pack of seeds from Heirloom this year and it was sasafrass seed. Is this a tree seed or is their a sasafrass plant that I am unaware of?

Animal, I did some reading on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sassafras_albidum
very interesting. But it needs something we don't have - water-lol

Korn, You just said a mouthful! Hope this rain comes to pass they are predicting for next week.

ya sometimes I get tired of watching the forecasts, they're always predicting more than we get. gets me excited and I hold off on doing some field work and then rain doesn't happen. Sure not starting out too good this year. I hope we ain't feeding out hay come summer.

Thats' a new one, sasafrass seeds. I wonder what the hay you would do with it? I am wondering if you got some herb seed named sasafrass? Did you ever figure it out? I have some sasafrass leaves that I stored and dried to make root beer with. I looked up a while back and it was stated that sasafrass can be toxic and was outlawed in root beer usage in the early 70's. Now I am kinda leary about making tea out of it anymore, I really like the taste.

(quoted from post at 21:25:27 03/28/14) sasafrass seed. Is this a tree seed
According to Wikipedia "Sassafras trees grow from 9–18 m (30–59 ft) tall and spreading 7.5–12 m (25–39 ft). The trunk grows 70–150 cm (28–59 in) in diameter".

It brings back childhood memories of sassafras tea in the spring. We'd dig some roots and mom would make a tea. It didn't taste bad. Mom said it thinned our blood for the summer heat.

Hayray, check the "insert". It says Sassafras is known by the state of California to be carcinogenic. But since you live elsewhere I personally wouldn't worry about it in moderation.
