herbicide plan for spring wheat

If there are just broadleaf weeds, 2,4-D is what I use. If there are grasses (green and yellow foxtail), then I add in Puma or its generic equivalent.

Do you spray anything as a pre-emergence or just wait after scouting the field? What size do you want the wheat at when you first spray.
Had weeds horribly last year and don't want it to happen again. I think most of it was that there was just a lot more winter kill (last year it was winter wheat)than I thought leaving more area for weeds to take hold.

We do not use a pre-emerge on our wheat, just come in when the wheat is around six inches tall (best to get the weeds when they are under 4"). I have sprayed nearly up to the boot stage, but that knocks down the grain late enough that it won't recover very well from being run over. If there is a good stand of wheat, one post-emerge application will kill, but if the grain is drowned out or a little thin in spots, broadleaves will come back before harvest. We almost always have late-season pigeon grass (one of the foxtails I think) that will green things up bad if harvest is delayed by wet weather. If you have bad Canada thistle, you will probably have to hit that with something stronger, but a labeled rate of 2,4-D will kill small pigweed, lambsquarters, cocklebur, and bindweed if they are actively growing and fairly small. A surfactant or water conditioner helps to make the chemical more effective too. Hope this helps!
