Open pollinated corn seed

I was wondering how much interest there is in open pollinated corn out there. In my area there really isn't any mostly because all corn is irrigated dryland corn does not really exist except for rare occasions. Most of the research I have done says that OP corn handles stress better than a lot of hybrids do. however when the going is good hybrids take of and leave the op in the dust. One gentleman I spoke to grows it on his marginal ground and says it does as good as his hybrid corn does on the same ground. however when planted on his good ground the hybrid is the way to go. I was wondering if there are people out there that still grow it on a large scale. Several dozen acres and take it to the elevator or feed a substantial number of animals with it?
thank you

It can do really well and is a lot cheaper to buy but the stuff I've seen has a far lower germination rate. You can up your rate on the planter but the problem you have then is you might have spots where it all germinates and your over populated, then other spots that are still lower. Might not be with all open pollinated, maybe just the seed I've seen. I've also had neighbors that grew it and said it got tremendously tall but wind knocked it over before combining. Maybe that was because the actual plant population after the lower germination rate was lower and it had less competition and grew better? They went to planting it every other row and the regular stalks helped to keep it upright. That didn't help you out much did it?

I planted corn in my food plot last year. I think it was OP as it only cost $125.00 per bag 80,000 count. On my good ground it did very well--but again it was just a food plot. Planted on my lighter ground was pretty much a failure. I plan to plant it again this year.

My father grew a lot of the old Landcaster Sure-crop OP corn. It routinely grew 10-14 ft. tall. Trouble is it was a 125 day corn and we are in an 85-90 day area. He always mixed in some hybrid corn to get more ears. There was an OP called Sweepstakes that was popular at the time. It also grew on the hight side of 10 ft. tall but the standability wasn't as good.

been raising some white op corn for last 10 yrs ,, started out with a couple ears,..and grew from there ,, initially to grind for cow feed ,,last yr., I grew 400 bu of white open pollinated corn ,it threw cgb for a loop, when I brought them some in ,,they had no market ,I put it on craigs list @12 bux a hundred wt ,,, some went to bardstown to make shine ,, i will plant about 5 acres this yr..I like to plant it along the woods where thedeer play ,, the ears are about 5-8 ft off the ground...
