I Cleaned up an old grape arbor,a purple concord grape that gets ripe in september in ps. Should fertilizer or compost / manure,be worked in around the ground where the vines are? Do the grape vines do better or should I Leave them alone?

Larry, we have a concord grape that grows well here in Missouri. We have some on the Home place that is a century farm and to my knowledge they have not been touched in forty years except for picking. With that being said, I would probably mulch or do what you want to try with a half or third of them and see what happens, and by all means let us know how it works for you...Animal

Larry: I'm a complete novice with grapes and I'm wanting to learn a lot more. But what I've done in the past is I weeded the row then I used compost on both sides all the way down the rows. But I was told don't pack it next to the base of the vine, leave a little space. This seemed to work a lot better than straw. I had tons of weeds with the straw and they didn't get any feed. Good Luck Mick

Concords will probably manage regardless; if you'd like to give them some compost, put it on in spring, but don't work it in too much - they have shallow feeder roots (they also have deeper roots, of course) which the books say are prone to damage from too much/too deep cultivation. Having read the books, I haven't dug around mine too much, so it's just book learning.
