corn for ear picking

what seed corn do you fella's find works good for ear picking? my local dealer says "it all works good for picking" and to some point i can understand that. but it's all made for easy shelling also so picking on the ear i dont want an easy shelling corn, as i grind ear and all.

I been thinking about growing some corn myself to grind or cut silage. The seed corn around here is over 200.00 a bag too high for me. TS sells bag corn for deer feeding for about 10 bucks a bag. I know I will have to plant twice as much or more but I'm OK with that.

I think you will b disappointed with that. Hybred corn does not reproduce well. So instead of getting 100-200 bu an acre potential, you might only get 25-75 bu potential.

Then, corn is real sensitive to plant populations it doesn't like to be crowded unless it gets fed and watered very well, so just randomly doubling the planting population will further reduce yield.

I think that is just going to be a disaster.

You could find conventional corn for $100-150 a bag maybe, that would do ok grain. And you could use a heirloom type open pollinate for silage for cheaper cost.

Just, you do kinda get what you pay for. I understand cutting costs and not shooting for 200 bu yields with the top cost hybreds, but you will be very disappointed using regular old bin run corn, it won't produce many cobs at all.

When I said planting more I meant more acres not more seed.
Had a nephew who planted some for a deer food plot on virgin ground .It was only about a half acre but had some nice size ears.

I grew some Masters Choice last year. They seem to be more interested in growing feed corn than corn for processing. It picked pretty darned good.

I use a shorter day seed from Carhart. It makes smaller ears but with a little higher pop. I made decent production. Went through the picker very well.
