when is the best time to do this? or would you even do it? Been spreading manure on pasture before winter to let freeze and thaw break it down but was thinking bout running a harrow across it in spring? will it help with growth or hurt it? thanks

I was told by conservation the gal who comes out to help you manage your farm for both wildlife and farm animals that I should run a drag across the fields on a warm winter day to spread out the manure better so there was not thick spot of it

Do you have cattle on it? Anything walking around will take care of it come spring unless we are talking about way too much manure or something. If you have uneven distribution I would just drag something - old telephone pole or piece of railroad track. The piles of cow manure sure don't do it any harm. Unless you have it real thick in places I would let it be.

I use the manure spreader and forget about it.

it doesnt hurt to do it if any weeds it will knock them down .scattering the manure spreads the nutrients around avoids that green spot and uneven regrowth. you can get along without it but it doesnt take much to do and gets a good return for the effort

Will help kill parasites that would live in the manure clumps and keep the grass from clumping. I do it every spring using a old tire drag.

My good friend has a cattle farm. He has one of those real heavy harrows, hyd wing fold and has wheels. pretty aggressive. He tries to pull it in the spring when can get over fields without tracking and harrow still works. He has good pasture and hay fields.

I harrow using a 3 piece 15 foot harrow every spring. Like the others have said, it spreads out the cow piles and keeps the pasture from having those green spotty clumps where the piles are. If you are spreading your manure with a manure spreader, then you should not need to drag it. My thot is that it also helps break up the dry matter laying on the ground from last year.
