Let's talk about bale spears

Well, I broke my homemade spear that attaches to the bucket with a chain. It lasted 4 years but snapped clean in half. It never worked that well because it carried the bale about 18 in out from the hydraulics and made the single cylinder work too hard.

I have a 48 quick tach loader. Recently Washburn and Worksaver have come out with a adapter for these older single cylinder loaders to a skidsteer mount. I plan on doing that.

I will have the bucket changed over to a skidsteer mount.

Plan to buy a skidsteer bale spear attachment. Maybe later a grapple.

Is it a good idea to go with the skidsteer mount system or should I go with a 500/600 series QT mount. Washburn (but not Worksaver) have a 48/58 mount that converts to the Deere system.

Second question - 1 spear with two small spears or 2 long spears? About same price. Will probably go with Titan for these. Offer free shipping.

All I can say is,from my experience Worksaver makes some pretty good stuff. I made this spear though. It fits my Horst quick attach. The frame is from a piece of box iron that was a bracket for saddle tanks. The spear is a big truck axle. The angle iron that sits down over the quick attach plate is part of a side rail off of an old trailer that I cut up because the frame was rusted out.

The spear I broke was a truck axle. Prob 1.5in in diameter. Snapped it clean in half at the point it emerged from the angle iron in the pic above. Still very surprised it broke.

Notice the new weld? I did the same thing about two weeks ago in that sub zero weather. I was trying to get a bale down out of the stack, couldn't reach the top one,so I was trying to lift two at once and SNAP. Lucky for me I had another axle here and had it slid in to a piece of pipe in the frame. I just cut and ground the old weld away, slid this one in and welded it back up. If I break this one,I guess I'll have to modify that $50 Tarter spear that I saved from the scrapper a year ago.
If you ever want to spend some real money on something nice,I've had this Worksave BaleHand for probably 17-18 years now. I made that one over to the Horst quick attach too. For now I only use it on the Oliver 1600. I don't have a 3 spool valve on the 1365 yet to use it on there, but it will fit the quick attach on both tractors. I can stack bales four high on end in the barn with this. It's super nice this time of year because I can take the strings off in the barn, squeeze the bale and take it out and drop it in the feeder without having to get off the tractor and without the bale falling apart.

Look at the skid steer mount forks and spear sets that MDS in Parkston SD sells Super engineering and great price.

i have a freeman 4000 loader on a 165 massey ;the
manure bucket is fitted with a 2in pipe for bale
spear it looks factory but i struggle getting it
into a bale unless there is something behind it to
stop it from slidin away.so i pulled it off took
my 3-point bale spear from tsc.made a few minor
modifications to the bucket and spear;now i can
set the 3-point bale spear right inside the bucket
and attach it with a couple hitch pins that hold
it in place.the spear is smaller than the original
one.it slides right in the bales with ease.

I have a home made bale spear from a truck axle and a square pto shaft. Made a 2 inch square tube frame. Works the best to load trucks. Also have a set of pallet forks. Taking the twine or plastic off is a pain. Wish had a grabber also. Our tractor is the small JD quick tach. Two snap pins to take out, works good. Should have changed it to skid steer plate when new, a lot more options.

I agree skid steer quick attach bale spears are the way to go. I'd hate to try to load/unload an 18 wheeler load of hay as I do with a bucket with a spear attached obscuring my vision and risking tearing up bales.

seen one made for allis snap coupler all the
guy did was take a piece of angle iron cut a
point on one end and weld a piece on the
other end to make a box drilled a hole and
slid over snap coupler arms
