Seed corn prices

Anybody talked to a seed corn salesman lately? I haven't ordered a thing yet. Just had a salesman call me. I told him I was sitting on my hands waiting for the price to come down. He said it wasn't going to happen. I told him there would be a lot of seed companies sitting on a lot of seed if they didn't come up with some massive discount programs by spring then because way too many guys would go to beans before they'd pay these prices to grow $3.75 corn. I don't think he was real happy,but he did say that he guessed they'd be sitting on a lot of seed then.

I am afraid he is most likly telling the truth.

They are still paying the high cost of fertilizers that we are.

They also have already sold and have paid for seed for 2014. They are not going to go back to them and give them a refund.

Fertilizer prices dictate most of our cost swings.

Fertilizer has dropped a bit from last year so seed should follow for 2015.

Beans seed is still high as well.

I wouldn't bet on the price. It was Specialty Seed. The same salesman was starting at $330 a bag a year ago. Wouldn't even talk about discounts. A few months ago he said he could start at around $190 for conventional. Today he was down to $188 for double stacked.
If these salesmen have to go back to Monsanto and DuPont and tell the big shots that selling seed this year is about like trying to sell icecubes to an Eskimo,there are gonna be discounts coming out of the woodwork in the next few months. Won't happen though unless enough of us tell them where to put their seed at those prices.
Call your salesman back and tell him you're thinking about cancelling your order because somebody else is offering deep discounts already and see how fast he can offer you a better deal.

I had one older, reliable variety this year, but it seemed to top out at 155 bu. Newer ones got to about 205 bu. My average cost per bag was not bad compared to some friends, because of that older variety. But my savings clearly cost me. So this year it's all newer stuff.
Paid first week of Dec.- ave. $274.12/bag
(list- ave. $330.26/bag)!

I'm going to take my chances for a while. I still think there'll be some massive discounts. Salesmen saying "look,don't tell anybody I did this,but....."
Like I said,I got a phone call yesterday saying prices weren't coming down,then when I acted totally disinterested he dropped a $40 discount right out of the blue,today I got a calendar from another salesman. They want to sell. I'll let them simmer for a while.

Depending on supply the cheap seed may be cheap for a reason.

My most expensive seed I ever bought was the least price per bag.

I buy early to insure I get the seed varieties I want. Not second choice varieties.

If you don't care about yield than disregard this post.

I will agree cheap seed that doesn't yield well is expensive yield but often my $150 a bag conventional is as good or better than my $300 a bag triples, high price doesn't always mean high yield. Refuge in a bag is so people can't see that the refuge corn often outyields the stacked varieties.

I haven't heard anybody claim that any varieties will be in short supply. If one company doesn't have the genetics you want,I'm willing to bet somebody else will.

My best corn last year was also a refuge corn.

I"m not saying the highest price is the best.

I"m saying get the numbers that do good for you and they may be well worth that extra 20 to 50 a bag.

I do not know who sell for, but I can assure you that seed corn price are in fact falling as we speak. As they say of course. All it takes is a little price shopping.

Every salesman or saleslady in America will be saying "look,don't tell anybody I did this,but....." by the end of January. If the Report today is bearish and corn goes lower again, watch out below for seed corn prices.

I was pricing seed up at the Keystone show Wednesday, and the prices are close to what they were last year. I do know that I complained to the Hubner guy here about the drydown last year, and he threw four units extra onto my order from him, triple stack stuff. It was close to $300. There are some conventionals around $150, but all the seed guys tell you that Monsanto and them get a huge 'technology' fee for each bag and trait....

I just saw on US Farm Report that Monsanto is reporting seed corn sales are down 7%,soybean seed sales are up 16%.

Sure are a lot of the old and new hippie folks with their free range chickens, and non GMO fed beef looking for the old, standard corn for feed.

That already is a niche market in areas.

I retired last summer and have older, smaller equipment and some smaller fields that I am considering growing some non GMO and organic stuff to sell to the hippies.

Might work. I feed everything to my own cattle though and grow some continuous silage corn on some ground that's too wet to rotate to alfalfa,so I about have to have Roundup Ready and Bt on that ground.

Bought my seed already from the same company as last year. If the price of the type of seed that I bought goes down or if more discounts are coming I will be getting a rebate.
I did the same thing last year and wound up with a nice credit.
Fertilizer prices are down also and I ordered that at the same time from the same supplier with the same promise of a rebate if lower prices occur.
