What plow to purchase?

Thinking of plowing this spring in addition to just tractor pulling . What do you guys suggest I purchase for my M5 diesel stock with loaded tires in medium virgin soil, 4 or 5 - 16 bottom etc ?

Thanks

If you are talking a M5 MM tractor the 4 16 will be a load.

Isn"t that M5 a 50 to 60 HP tractor. My uncles M5 would struggle with 4=14 in clay hills.

I have tough soils, but ran a 4-16 with an 85 hp tractor, now a 4-20 with 135 hp. Got a 3-16 to pull with my 60hp tractor.

Not really sure what an M5 is, assume you got it right.

To start with listen to Paul and Gary . If you are doing it for fun it is alot more fun scootin along with a smaller plow than spinnin and diggin with one that is to big . In the day Oliver made about the easyest plow to pull , I have a Ford that is made by oliver and painted blue , same thing . They make them in 3 bottom and up semi-mount .

My M5 is a Minneapolis Moline TA with loaded tires and has about 60 hp . Thanks for the info. guys . My neighbour has about 40 acres of virgin land he wants plowed in the spring , by virgin , I mean it hasn't been worked for a few years and is medium soil ( not much clay )

In my clay a 3-16. You might do ok with a 4-16, or better a 4-14 in lighter soils. Often a 4 bottom is cheaper than a 3 bottom in semi mount, which are nice plows to have.

Some models you can remove the tail wheel assembly, remove the back bottom, and bolt the tail wheel assembly back on where the rear bottom was. You nee dot modify the steering linkage some, shorten. This would let you buy a 4, but use it as a 3 bottom if needed.

Have one of the local BTO's drop in there with a HD 36 foot disc/harrow, and he will double disc it for you in for about 500 dollars.

I could rent out my whole farm and let a BTO come in with 36" disk sized equipment and farm it. Thats not the point. If he wants to do some real farm tillage with his tractor then why not encourage him.

Ya, I just want to put the Minie to work and have fun -- don't know what to charge the guy yet -- haven't even talked about it, but it could lead to other nearby fields to be plowed. You are probably right about bigger equipment being cheaper to operate per acre.

A M5 should have 70 to 80 hp. I demonstrated them with 5-16" . For a semi-mounted plow you will need a quick-coupler, to make the draft control work. a MM one that will push on the top link. A Moline plow is almost the same as a Oliver, just a little longer at the hitch. I would look for a 4-14 one. but set the plow to 16. they are adjustable. Then cut 2 inches off the share. It will tear the 4 inches off and pull easier and make the dirt turn over completely. The easiest way to set a Moline semi-mounted plow up is at the house on a concrete floor. drive the left tire up on a 8 in block. Set the 3 point and rear tire to raise the plow 10 inches high and level side to side and front to back. You will be suprised how close this is. Vic
