fertalizer for wheat

Around here, for many years, now, we have quit using drill boxes to apply fertilizer, mainly because they are such a pain in the ask to clean, and hard to load. We can move faster just drilling the seed in, and spinning the fertilizer on with a bulk buggy, and do it in the same amount of time or less. The older drills here are either eaten out or look like new, and the newer drills don't even have fertilizer boxes on them.

I always planted about 200 lb when we used the fertilizer box on the drill. Now we broadcast and disk it in before we plant. Sometimes we would broadcast another 100 lb of urea on in the early spring, but quit that because it was too hard to get it on without tracking up the fields and I"m not sure it paid off because there was never any dramatic differences in the yields.
