does anyone know what wed it might be in Virginia that smells like licorice when cut with a mower? I don't know what it looks like but after I cut a patch of weeds I often get a strong odor like licorice.

I think it's called Fennel, it's an herb my wife used to raise. Grows wild all over the world IIRC.

Bert is right, Fennel. Don"t really have to cut it just brush against it and you can really smell it. Does help draw in some beneficial insects though.
