Whats the best method for reseeding clover.

After my most recent red clover harvest it appears my clover was severely thinned, allowing grass and other problem plants to start to invade. I was wondering what to best technique of saving these fields would be as far as reseeding techniques. Thanks Mike

Red clover generally has a two year life span. Could this be your issue? It will reseed itself if left to produce seed and not cutting each regrowth for hay. You have several options for reseeding. 1. Work the ground and start all over. 2. No-till more clover into the stand. 3.. Frost seed more clover this coming January or February (depending upon where you live). Frost seeding has been VERY effective for me. Only one year out of the last 20 have I failed to get a stand. Even that year, I "had" a good stand, but the summer drought killed it. Many producers in my area will routinely sow 5-8 pounds EVERY year. This eliminates the "third year no clover" issue. If you have a grass problem now, early seeding of clover overcomes this. The clover will start off early and often times suppress the grasses. I"ve had clover so thick that it literally choked out all grasses. You "may" have a ph (lime) problem as well as low fertility. Check to be sure.

'Sounds redundant, but the NUMBER 1 reason people fail to get a stand of clover is because they don't put the seed out there.

No-tilling clover into frozen ground works wonderfully too.
