Drilling Winter Peas/Radishes

I want to drill Austrian Winter Peas and Daikon radishes for a cover crop/food plot. Seed dealer said to plant peas about 30#/acre and radishes about 5#/acre together. Drill is a JD/VB FB, and it has the small seed box. Would it be best to mix both together in the big seed box, or split them up with the radishes in the small box? It appears that both plant about the same depth. Thanks, Mark.

Not knowing any better, I put the peas and oats in the big box
and plant to depth, and put the radish, turnip, clover, and/or
alfalfa seed in the little box and allow that seed to scatter on
top, with the drag rings covering with a bit of dirt, and THRN
harrow the field right after planting with the harrow not very
aggressive.

It has worked for me. I never planted peas without oats tho, so
I don't know.

I would think the radish seed would kinda settle out in the
space between the peas, and not stay mixed until the end?
perhaps?

Paul

Definitely put the radishes in the small box. You will get too much separation by mixing the two. You've got the small seed box.....why not use it?

Thanks for the replies. I did go ahead and split them up. Had to guess on the settings for both. No setting published in the manual for radishes in the small box. The setting for peas in the big box started at 84#s/acre. We'll see how close I guessed. It was a push to get the 4 different plots, totalling about 9 acres, drilled. Forecast calls for rain tonight and tomorrow. Got em done just before dark. As I type this, a nice little thundershower is rolling through. Man, I like it when a plan comes together. :D

That really is a great feeling. So how close did you come to your desired seeding rate on both? How many times did you change the settings on the drill?

I think I guesstimated pretty close the 3rd time. Pretty sure the first plot is a little heavy on peas. It's 5 acres more or less, drilled amost every pea of the 150#s in the hopper. The radishes are probably good. Just have to wait to see how it looks after germinating. Should have near perfect weather for the next week to ten days to bring it up.

Ive had some problems on my massey drill with
crushing radish seeds when the rate is set
correctly. However, the rate for radishes should
be fairly close to the rate chart for alfalfa.
Radish seeds are a little bigger, but not a lot..
