WILL PLANT A 1 ACRE SWEET CORN PATCH FOR THE FIRST
TIME NEXT YEAR. TWO QUESTIONS.
1.BEST VERITY FOR SOUTH LOUISIANA.
2.I DO NOT HAVE A SIDE DRESSER. SHOULD I SIDE DRESS BY HAND AND WHAT IS THE WAY TO DO THIS? ARE IS THERE A SPRAY FERT. THAT WOULD DO THE SAME THING? KEEP IN MIND THIS IS MY FIRST TRY AT IT. THANK YOU GUYS.

Talk with the agronomist at your local feed mill. He can recommend a regimen for growing corn that will fit your area.

Two tricks. Don't try to plant it too thick, and don't forget to spray it for bugs and worms.

Also, spread your plantings out by 5-7 days so it doesn't all come in at one time.

I'm just outside Houston so I'm close to the same Gulf Coast climate as yours.

I plant G90. It's a bicolor sweet corn that does really well in my black gumbo. I don't irrigate so plant about 8" apart.

Over the years I've collected the fertilizer attachments for my planter and cultivators. Before that I plowed, disced, then broadcast fertilizer, ran a drag harrow and planted. I didn't fertilize a second time. I do fertilize a second time now and really can't tell a whole lot of difference.

I don't spray at all. I will get some ear worms, but heck, they need to make a living to.

Here is a stand of sweet corn called "Whiteout", it has small ears, small kernels, and sure is sweet. This patch was side dressed by hand, coffee can in each hand. Then cultivated with a Farmall Super AV, to cover the fert.

I live in Southern Il. so I don't know what varieties for you to plant. Heck I don't know what variety I plant. I just plant what my dealer recommends. I planted Round-up ready and BT seed. So weed control is easy and no worms or bugs. We have to put at least two electric tapes around our patch to keep deer and coons out. I plant with a 1 row planter (home-made out of a kinze unit) I just plant 4-30 in rows at a time. wait at least 2 weeks between. planted last July 7th harvested it last week. I also water my patch from a pond. I use the cheapest sump pump I could find and move the garden hose between the rows will do a acre a week easily. I have a 12 volt dry spreader I pull behind my Golf Cart. I spread 400 lb of 6-24-24 about now. Then next spring after the corn is about 6 inches tall I side dress with 200 lb of 46-0-0 Nitrogen. Then when it is about 16 in tall put that much more on. I also have a 16 gal spray tank for the golf cart, with a 14 ft spray nozzle.(northern). O I leave a row out every 4 rows for the cart to drive in. That way I can spray the Round-up when the corn is head high if I need to. I guess you know a acre is about 209 by 209 ft. 43560 sq ft. I have a 5 ft 3pt tiller to work the ground. I will till it once in a few weeks, then again in the spring, maybe till it 2 or three times in the spring. Hope this helps, Vic
