So I just purchased 5 acres adjonning my home properity that is mostly clear. Good 4 wire fence with electric all around. Was used by my neighbor to run cattle on and cut hay. Anyone out there raise buffalo instead of cattle? Was thinking about just a few ( 3 or 5 ) but wounder if the barb wire fence will hold them. Is it even worth the effort?

Steve, there is a fellow on here that goes by the name of "bison". He frequents the Tractor talk section guite a lot. I"ve never seen him respond to anything in the "crop talk" section. You might try to post your question in the tractor talk section and see if he responds. I "think" he raises buffalo.

Worked as ranch manager for place that had large herd in the late 1980s. 1 or 100 they are about same trouble. You cant fence them in just gotta learn to keep them happy where they are.Bison are a wandering breed from eons ago. Also keeping them on close range you MUST have aggressive parasite control or you got dead Bison.

Saw eight buffalo cows on a neighbors place once, walk along a four wire barb fence as close as they could get. They stopped and stood there for a few minutes and then, one after another, flatfoot jumped sideways over the fence. It was so fast I couldn't believe it. Guy who owned them finally got rid of them. Couldn't keep them in a fence if they wanted to wander.

We have a guy not too far from me raises buffalo. He has a fence that looks like something from a maximum security prison. At that, they still get out on occasion. One time the Border Patrol ended up shooting a bunch of them when they attacked their vehicles. Strange critters.

4 strands of barb ain't gonna even start to do it.

Several folks have had some around here. Every place has pens built like prison facilities- there for the long haul and built for business. Guy about five miles from here had about a dozen, and used to brag about his herd, but he went out of business after a couple of years. His bull and a few cows got out. He shot the bull on the neighbors place, and had to chase one of the cows for a couple of weeks. He tried four wheelers, horses, and even a helicopter. He finally shot her about ten miles from his farm. You can't drive them, or even con them easily. And, like a big bull, they will go where they want, and you won't stop them. If you think Angus will find a hole in a fence, a bison will make one if they feel like it. Cows are dumb enough, but a bison is smart enough to be dumber than cows and have the attitude to prove it.....

If you can make a fence that will keep elephants in you might have a chance of keeping buffalo in.
Don't ever let a buffalo lick you, their tongue is rougher than 40 grit sandpaper.
