white face heifers

I have about 12 white face heifers, 10 dairy cross steers (between 500 and 1000 lbs each), 5 beef cross calves(around 500 lbs each), 3 white face calves (3 months old), 4 jersey cross calves (125 lbs each) and a fellow wants to buy them. He doesn't want to pay a set price, he wants to buy them by the pound. What is a fair price to sell them for per pound across the board if he takes everything. I don't really understand the market report so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a really tough question given the wide variation in weight ranges of all the cattle. I wouldn't sell them to him like that for anything. Before I'd do that I'd load all of them up and take them to the sale barn where you will be paid according to the current value of the different weight ranges of ALL the cattle. I think this guy is playing you for a sucker. Seller beware.

If you don't understand the market report you probably also don't understand the many ways a cattle jockey will take advantage of you. Remember they do this every day all day. If you have good quality cattle and those BWF heifers are angus/Hereford cross 7-800 lbs they could be worth a grand apiece here in central mn as could your Holstein steers in that 800 lb range. Do you know what they weigh? Our local feed store loans out a cattle scale to the patrons, maybe something similar in your area. I think the best advice comes from the sale barn advocates. There are certain advantages to dealing with a licensed and bonded outfit that guarantees you a good check and a competitive market.
