Raising tame blackberries.

There is probably an obvious answer to this question so here goes: In April 2011 I planted 16 thornless blackberry plants. The vines have grown and expanded but only one plant of the 16 has produced any berries. Those weren"t produced until this summer. They are planted in medium quality soil. Last year we had a bad drought and deer were pretty hard on them toward the end of the summer. Should I just pull them and start all over or should I try something else. Thanks in advance.

I had one stalk of wild blackberries that produced beautiful fruit. I checked another large patch and didn't find a single berry. I was disappointed. Usually the wild ones are just seedy little nubbins.

I know that first year canes do not produce anything. I see a lot of plants in my area not producing anything at all. They are susceptable to virus that are carried on strawberries, tomatoes and wild blackberry varieties.

Pile them up with lots of manure and straw. You need lots of growth for fruit. If the deer were hard on them then there went your berries. The straw will hold in good moisture and keep out weeds.

I usually pick about 25 gallons off of my plants. Just remember that you are working at least a year ahead. Tie that new growth loosely to fences or cattle panels to help support them. Again, lots of manure and straw. I don't prune mine at all. I just pull out dead canes in about May.
