extra corn roots

Walking in the corn field this evening I noticed quite a few corn plants having two sets of anchor roots. One set at ground level like normal and another set headed out into thin air about two inches up.
Anyone know the cause of this? Planting depth? Moisture level at a certain stage of growth?
Seemed to go in streaks 10-20 plants in a row (but not all plants) and more prevalent on the outside 4-6 rows.
Also, do you think it is an extra drain on the plant that may affect yield? The plants seem no less vigorous than their normal looking neighbors.
100 day corn in south central MN Thanks
