Do I grease a sickle bar?

I never grease them. I do at times pour some old oil on it at the start of the cutting season just to free it up some and help clean off the winter rust

Pour a little diesel fuel over the bar while it is running. That will lubricate it as it shines up and dissolve some of the dried grass juice and rust on the guards.

Can't garrantee if it was right or wrong, but my Dad said to squirt a little oil by the hold down clips every hour of so, while giving the horses a minute rest. He said that is why there was the oil can holder next to the tool box.

I never used grease on a sickle but have poured many gallons of waste oil on mowers, swathers and combines.

As others have said on here, we always used used motor oil. We actually had an old bleach jug that had part of it cut out to keep the oil in and it had a brush down in just for slathering oil on the sickle bars and on the plow moldboards. Like most others we oiled ours at the first of the hay season and sometimes when we sharpened the knife and had it running at the barn. By design though the cutterbar shouldn't need oiling while mowing, the juice from grass does that like others mentioned.
