want to start farming.

I would like some ideas on input costs for corn and beans. 1st off I have everything to start except a planter but could borrow one to plant beans if I don't come up with one before next year. I have a line on 8acs for something around 200-250 ac. To give you an idea of my equipment have 3 60hp tractors give or take. A jd720 diesel, IH 560 d and a IH 756 d also have a super M anda W400 IH. I have 2 4-16 plows a 14'disc and a 14' field cultivator actually it's like 19 but gonna take the wings off. I have 1 gravity wagon roughly 250bu elevator isn't more than 5miles or so. I could borrow another or 2 if need be. For the combine have an early 4400 with 444 cornhead and a 13' rigid platform but has auto height. So I have a good start just looking for a rough estimate for what I'd need to put either corn or beans in the ground next spring. After next yr or 2 would like to start picking up more land shooting to find the little 4-5ac pieces too small for the bigger guys to want to mess with thanks in advance. I'm in northeast Il. Dekalb/kane county area

You will need a sprayer and a GOOD planter of your own.
Input costs are directly proportional to expected yields. Triple stack seed corn about $110 an acre. Fertilizer about $120. Roundup , twice at 1 qt per app, $30. Fuel if you no til with a diesel about 9 gals per acre for everything. We are at $320 and this is optimistic. No labor, maintenance, repairs.
No grain hauling. Figure those and your labor and you are at $500.
And you get 160 bpa x 6 = $960 gross.
What do the Iowa guys say?

I'm not out west, but I started with 6 acres, and a lot less iron. And those 4-5 acre pieces add up. But you need big bucks, and a lot of perserverance to build something up. But you can figure close to $450-500/acre, and hope these prices hold. Don't get too froggy, and save where you can. Put some away for next year. It's a long haul- good luck.....

So I"m in central Iowa and your cost will definately very. The costs below total up to $340 for just the major inputs. Then add fuel, repairs, and interest and you"ll be at an easy $500 over what ever rent is. Your fuel costs will be higher than nomal with older equipment, but it"s still a drop in the bucket when you look at the whole budget. Good Luck!!!

*Assuming Corn on Corn your nitrogen cost will be close to $90/acre. Take $25 of if following soybeans.

*Dry spread P&K will very a lot based on location and yeild, but a yearly maintance could easily be $75/acre(range is probable $20 either side of that)

*A shot of glyphosate plus a good Pre-emerge and two shots of application from CPS or the local coop will be the better part of $30/acre (about $12 of that is application costs. I"d by a cheap old sprayer personally)

*Corn could very well be right on the money at $110. Don"t skimp on seed cost!

*Insurance (which bankers will require) can easly be $35/acre depending on what options you elect.

Well seeing as the 1st year will only be 8acs I plan on funding it by cash so no banks. I also have about 2.5acs in hay that I own and are using my dad's equipment and selling the hay which will for the most part fund planting the 8acs in beans. Don't think I'll be able to do corn plus if follow the current rotation the land is in next year would be beans it's in corn this year.
