seeds per foot

Starting to sow soybeans with a JD 494A planter and using the 20 cell plates. It appears to be putting out 18 to 20 seeds per foot. I thought about 5 to 8 seeds per foot would be plenty is this to much per foot? And what setting on the gear box is correct for planting beans 2,3, or 4?

Is this for a food plot or are you doing this hoping to make money?
Your planter MANUAL will tell you the pop for different row spacing.

Are you sure you have the right plate? Sounds like it is dropping multiples. Using 18 seeds per foot in 15" rows according to Dickey-john conversion charts your are planting around 640,000. Does a 494 use sprockets or some other gearing to determine seed spacing?

That makes a big difference. As the planter was designed with 30 inch rows, you may need to get a special sprocket to slow down to half the seed rate.

10 - 14 is a common spacing at 30 inch, so you need to cut that in half, 5-7 beans per foot. Probably on the 7 side....

Your planter has 2 places to adjust seed rate, as well as different plates. I've not used one so can't help you specificly.

A manual for a planter, baler, or combine is a very, very, very good investment........
