Baling straw behind a rotary combine

Nephew has asked me to bale a few acres of wheat straw for him. I've never baled behind a rotary combine. Any hints? Or will I notice much difference with the bales?

Thanks

You will notice it "real" quick! What comes out the back end of a rotary is short, chewed up and twisted up and hard to bale. Its hard to get good lookin bales out of any baler behind a rotary combine. I have tried raking straw out of a rotary and it dose not help at all. They say that there is a kit and some adjusting to get better straw out of one but I have never seen good straw baled behind one. You will find out quick that you have to handle the bales a lot more carefully as they will fall apart easy. Take it easy and take your time and you might get through it with out major problems. I wish you good luck. Bandit

One guy around here likes to bale behind the combine. If folks get a new combine that's rotary he quits baling their fields.

Bought a CaseIH 1640 last year. Had the same experience with wheat straw last year and at the beginning of harvest this year - almost as if I had a chopper (which the machine does not) - but a few days ago I decided to open the concave from a "1" (for hard to thresh crops) to a 2.5 (regular grain). Huge difference. Straw is not chewed up, full length with heads attached. Fully threshed. Going 3 mph in 70 bpa wheat w/16.5' header. Uses less power & fuel and increases capacity. Hit 3.8 mph yesterday trying to finish a field ahead of a storm. Bottom line, it's all about adjusting the machine correctly to match crop conditions. You can make nice straw behind a rotary. My neighbor put up several
thousand bales behind me last week and the bales (late model JD baler) were as perfect as one could hope for.

The Deere baler works better behind a rotary combine as the auger feeds it in better.Years ago a neighbor had barley straw cut with a rotary(it was a wet summer and the straw was rotten and brittle)his New Holland baler would not bale it as the feeder fingers just stired it rather than feed it into the bale case.He used our JohnDeere 327 and got along good.

brother has 2 ih rotary,, I baled straw for him ..using his propane 930 casein 4th gear and a 124 massey baler ,, the day was hot and dry.seemed like I had a waterfall of straw I was pushin ahead of the pikup on the baler .and slobberin off both sides of baler , but most of it went in the baler,, and made a nice lookin tite bale
