Blamed Wimmen Will Do It Every Time.....

They're calling for bad weather here today, and, of course, the big pet looks like she's gonna calve today. Put her in a pen to keep an eye on her. Right now, I have one calf recovering from surgery, and one waiting to go to the vet's next week. And I'm running out of pens.

We've been having problems with newborn calves having, what we have decided, is a navel defect caused by the bull. The bull is now gone, but about one in four calves have had a protrusion of the omentum coming out of the navel opening and being strangulated by the navel opening as it closes. The only way we can save the calf is by surgery at about a week old to remove it. Vet has never seen anything like it, nor has New Boulton.

Just another part of this fun game we call farming.....

Sorry to hear that. I lost a calf the other day from a first calf heifer, needed to be there to pull and could not find her on a big pasture. Get a good registered bull or lease one from a reputable breeder and look at EPDs, it will save you tons of problems. I hardly ever loose a calf because of good quality bulls.

This one WAS a registered bull with good EPD's. He cost me a small fortune two years ago, and is costing me more now. Just something unusual. We had a couple of problem calves last year, and just attributed it to normal calving losses and bad luck. This year has started all over again, so now we know it was that bull. Never had problems like this previously.
