"On my farm" that is cheat! But what is throwing me is you say it was "planted". I"ve never known of "cheat" being sown.

Isn't that also known as downy brome? As far as planting it,I never have, but I don't complain about any kind of grass that comes on in a pasture either.

Yes. Cheat and Downy Brome are the same thing. I dozed out the bank on a pond that was close to my house one time to get rid of the mosquitoes. The entire area came back solid with cheat. Only grows during the cool season times, but it flourishes then. It comes back every year (spring and fall) and the cows love it. Doesn't yield like the other grasses but I didn't spend any money establishing it either. I remember as a kid that was the primary grass on our entire farm. 'Cut it for hay, grazed it. Daddy didn't believe in fertilizer.....we actually didnt have the money to buy fertilizer. In the summer time when it was dead and laying over, that's all the cows had to eat. Daddy would feed cottonseed and salt free choice and our cows were FAT. We also had a naturally established Lespedeza field. We'd also cut that for hay. I always remember "the lespedeza" field. It was long and narrow and we had to cross the creek to get to it. We had an old Farmall tractor that was one size bigger than a cub. It had the gear shift lever on the left hand side. My brother and I hauled many loads of hay with that tractor. I got "good" at shifting with my left hand.

the man that planted the field said that he had it in beans and deer eat it all so he planted it in wheat and cut it last year for hay.. said he dont rember if he planted something else or not but the weat prob re seeded its self,, idk im have it identified.. whatever it is has been drilled in all over the farm.. u can see the straight lines in the field.. its mixed with timothy japanese clover and purple clover and some orchard grass.. thats waht i see in the field..
