Guys, I got some grass coming up in the end of one of my newly planted alfalfa fields, the alfalfa is about a month old and field was deep plowed and disked an harrowed before planting but the grass has went nuts on this one end of field. I was wondering what kinda spray most would recomend?? Thanks for any help, Hoss

Gosh, I don't think there is anything to kill grass out of alfalfa. But if you are using this hay for horses or selling it for horses it will make better hay with some grass in it.

Select is labeled for some alfalfa situations, and very very very good grass killer.

You see if it fits your needs. There are several generics out there too.

A book I have lists Arrow 2EC, Select Max, or Poast 1.5L as labeled for grass in alfalfa. Clethodim and sethoxydim, respectively, are the active ingredients.I don't know current prices, but looks like Arrow is the least expensive; use 6-16 ounces. $85.00/gallon. Book is copyrighted 2008. "Food Plots; Blending Science with Common Sense" from the University of Tennessee. Best $20.00 I've spent in a long time. I use it a lot.

What I have here around the home place, about 8 acres,is a mix of pure brome, alfalfa/OG, and pure alfalfa. And it works out that I have three buyers, each one wants one type. It took them a couple years to figure what was where, so I had them come look just before I mowed. Then they knew which plots to pick up the bales from. I sell it out of the field.

THe product you need is "Clethodim". There are some brand name products with different names but this is the chemical you need. Use a minimum of 12 ounces per acre.....maybe a touch more. I've used this with great success on straight alfalfa. It flat works. You "may" need to come back in in about 30 days and retreat as some grass species are hard to kill. I sowed 24 acres of alfalfa in 2010 that was infested with crab grass. I used Clethodim and was amazed at how well it worked!

That grass has probably choked out the alfalfa in that area. And you cannot overssed more alfalfa in there when you kill the grass. Jus t leave it and when you bale mark it with colored surveyors tape and sell as grass hay . Some horse hay buyers only want grass.
