Planting new hay stand

I have 50 acres that needs to be reseeded its in old hay right now but very short. I do not need any corn so I want to go right back into hay not planting corn into a rotation.Should we spray it with round up before we plow it?Then after we plow it I would think we will need to disk the heck out of it to break up the clumps.will be planting oats that will be used for a cover crop and then for hay for beef. Will be using a jd drill to plant the oats then go over with a brillion seeded for the seeding.seeding will consist of orchard ,fescue and brome grass.

What plants are in the field now?

If it is thick but short it may just need some food.

Fertilizer.

This is a very old hay stand with broad leaf weeds.they sprayed it with round up today so I am commited now.Took soil tests wasnt all that bad

Personally I would skip the fescue and seed it with orchard grass, brome and clover. Eventually the fescue will choke out the other grasses.

If it is going to be hay field more than pasture, I'd plant it to an annual crop like oats. Harvest them for hay, or graze them, then re-work the field this fall. With the old sod, I think it will be tough to get the soil worked down and smooth if you are going to be driving hay equipment around it a few times a year. Plow it and plant the rotation crop, give a chance for the old sod to break up, then prep it for your permanent use. Orchard grass and alfalfa is a good combo in my area, but use whatever is suitable for your soil/climate.

If you work it again and seed it down in the fall, you will have a far better crop next spring than if you seed it down this spring. Cool weather grasses start off much better in the fall than in the spring.
