fertilizer on wheat for hay

I plan on cutting a wheat field for hay probably the end of this month and then reseeding sudangrass in that area. With the wet spring I haven't been able to topdress nitrogen yet and it is already about 1' tall, would it be best to hold off and plow down fretilizer for the summer crop or go ahead and topdress now? Any input welcome

The additional nitrogen applied now will give "some" benefit to the wheat, but it is going to make a mess out of the field at this stage. You are definitely "at a cross roads" as to what to do. I'd almost opt to cut the wheat for hay and then fertilize for the sudangrass. Fetilizing the wheat now is darned if you do and darned if you don't. If the wheat looks good now, I"d say don't apply fertilizer. If the wheat looks sickly, then fertilize it. I'm sorry for your troubles...been there and done that myself.

Thanks. I had that feeling myself but wanted some advice. I just hope I can get the wheat off before prepay runs out. Are you expecting snow in your area? We are supposed to be cold and wet for the next couple of days.
