Last Planting Dates for Oats in SW Michigan

I had my fields all plowed a couple of weeks ago. Then the rains came, with more expected this week. When is the last date I can plant oats? This is just a food plot so I can switch to another crop if necessary.

Last year, people were planting oats in WI for forage in August.

If MI weather is like here- cold and wet- plant the stuff as soon as it dries up.

The deer won't care if it doesn't make 100 bu per acre. Or if they do, they won't complain!

Here the closer to the last day of March the better, but been a couple years we put oats in May 5th and got a good crop.

For just a waste strip, you have lots of time yet.

Mostly the oats wants cool damp until it heads out, so it just depends on the summer you get...

Why not do 1.5 acres oats, and 1.5 acres of one of those high protein Whitetail Institute legumes?

GordoSD;

Deer are not my main goal; more interested in rabbits and turkeys. I have several patches of clover/grass mix already.

There's no cut off date for them for food plots. Granted,they like cool wet weather,but I knew a guy who planted some in July one year and they ripened. Two years ago I planted mine May 5th and they yielded alright for grain. I seriously doubt I'll have them in that early this year the way things are going.
