What a day.....

It quit raining here this morning, but the wind is blowing at a good clip out of the west and it is cold! So I have spent the day working on insurance forms and looking on this computer at no till grain drills. I don't know which one sucks the most, I think its still the insurance forms. I just can not wrap my head around what they want for a ten or fifteen foot drill, used or new. I thought we were broke and in a recession or depression or concession, at any rate it is too much money for what your getting. Everything that I inquired about needs openers and or coulters, and they still think a twenty year old machine is worth half of new price. Are people really paying this kind of money for worn out junk?

Yep,and will be until grain prices come down. I saw the same thing 35 years or so ago. Couldn't touch a tractor or a piece of equipment for a reasonable price. I ended up buying a fair whack of new stuff back then. Didn't make sense to buy used at those prices, not to mention not even being able to find what I wanted in used stuff.

I know what you mean, I have been to some sales lately and cant believe the prices of tractors and equipment people are paying and most of it is wore out. I had been looking for a small No-Till drill for years and passed up 3 different ones in the last 4 months. 3 weeks ago I found a real good GT 1006 10ft no-till drill and traded for it. They were asking $6500 witch was to much but I traded 2 old tractors even for it and didn't have $2000 in both of them, So I think I did good on the trade. Time will tell if it was a good trade or not but at least I have more oppshions on planting. Keep beating the bushes theirs one out there for you, You just have to find it. Bandit

Part of the reason might be the "no-till" feature? It has to be built tougher/stronger than a conventional drill in order to compensate for the resistance of untilled soil.......so repair/wear parts need to be built heavier, and steel is $$$. No-till has its place, but isn"t the panacea.....no one system has all the answers. Simply doesn"t match all soil types, any more than a moldboard plow or chisel plow does. Good luck on your search.
