TRITICALE SEED PRICE

I want to plant triticale this fall and the prices for the seed is $23.00 to $25.00 per #50 does this sound right. It seems really high, I would have thought $18.00 per#50 would have been about right. The advice I'm getting is they have to get the next wheat crop in to determine the cost. I thought this was a hybrid cross between rye and wheat not a blend. Any ideas???

Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye, if they're telling you it's a blend they're trying to rip you off... Sorry, can't help you with the price, $25 seems high for less than a bushel, but who knows.

I hadn't heard of this company but just e-mailed them inquiring about their forage oats. Thanks for the tip (even though it wasn't directed at me!).

You are correct, but he is very cost concious, he once shipped me a bag of tillage radish in those all you can stuff postal boxes. They are good people, the kind of dealer that when you buy a legume seed is smart enough to know that you need inoculant.

Ok Phil, I just have to know, what are your intentions for triticale? I would like to try it for cover crops.

That is about the same price I was quoted last fall. My dealer said it was "hard to find"......undertone was "if you've got enough money we can find all you need" I didn't order any as I too thought it was too high, even though I've grown it successfully for a few years. (should have saved my own seed) They probably can't give you an exact price yet because it needs to be harvested first to determine the supply and thus the price. I personally like Triticale as it doesn't mature as fast as rye, but earlier than wheat. It makes good silage. The tonnage will be in between wheat and rye. If left to get too mature, it is like all small grain forages, mostly junk. If your intention is to use it strictly as a cover crop, you'll be better off with rye as it matures earlier, produces more tonnage and the seed costs less. You'll also get more fall growth with rye.
