What happened to the farm census thread?

So a guy gets down for a few days and one of the better threads gets poofed, what happened to it?

If your talking about the one I posted people started getting nasty so it went bye bye. But it is winter and it seems many people are showing there true colors and being great big but heads. You and I have seen it way to many times and each year it seems to be common this time of year

I wondered too. There was a link on it to measure fields. I didn't save it and wanted to use the link a day or two ago,but the whole post was gone.

At some point, the owners of this site have a certain responsibility to maintain accurate and truthful information. Quite a bit of what was posted in that thread became pure nonsense, rumors, innuendo, and biased hatred for ANYTHING "government", slamming what is useful and for the betterment of farming in the US.

No, I don't believe MOST of what the government tells us. No, I don't like current government AG policy. But...If we want POSITIVE change, the facts need to be on the table in order to get an accurate representation of what farmers want, need, and expect. And in spite of what some overly paranoid individuals seem to believe, we aren't engaged in rocket science. There's NOTHING we do that is so "top secret" that it needs to be concealed from the government. (unless you're engaged in something illegal)

Playing games, hiding facts, and misrepresenting the truth FROM OUR END is no different, hence no better than what some accuse the government of. Rampant paranioa and fear doesn't help....in fact, it HURTS our cause. Protesting what we have, but refusing to allow improvment is NOT very intelligent to say the very least.

If this were MY website, and some of those ridiculous post's showed up here, I would have deleted it a long time before it did go "poof".

I've always filled out my AG cencus. Never had any reason not to, nor has there ever been any negative repercussions from such. Then again, I don't wear a tin foil hat and sneak around hiding from the black helocopters that some people think they see.

I couldn't believe my ears when I watched US Farm Report this past weekend. The normally left wing globull warming pushing John Phipps said he's not going to comply. Said he'll pay the $100 fine amd politely hang up on whoever calls him about the census. Said it's not because he's opposed to giving the information, but because the results won't be published until February 2014. Said when NASS comes in to the 21st century and gets reports out in the time that 21st century technology allows,he'll tell them what's going on at his 21st century farm.

No matter what side of the fight a person is on, there won't be any progress towards correcting problems until we come to some sort of concensus on what needs to be done in the future. And I've heard enough from left AND right to understand that NEITHER side has all the answers. For that matter, neither side seems to even understand what the QUESTION is. Before we settle this, (if we ever do) BOTH sides of the isle are going to have to admit they are wrong about a number of issues. I'm not so sure BOTH sides aren't wrong more than they're right.

I'm sick and tired of people playing games with our future. That goes for politicians AND common, ordinary citizens alike. WAKE UP PEOPLE. WE'RE DESTROYING WHAT WAS THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH.

But not a lot of what is going on that is caused by the common man who tries to do right and work when he can but it is the guy up in D.C who has been there for 50 years like that senator from HA who was in for 50 year that is just plan crazy to have any one in office that long. WE NEED TERM LIMITS and no life time pension but all pay into S.S.

"There's NOTHING we do that is so "top secret" that it needs to be concealed from the government. (unless you're engaged in something illegal)"

That is true. On the other hand there is nothing I do that they need to know about.

It wasn't the "what I do" that stopped me. I filled it out until I got to the page where they wanted to know the value of my equipment. At that point I just wrote "I'm not going any further" and mailed it back.

So you don't believe the government needs to know anything about how farmers operate in order to set farm policy? Let me guess...Once they set farm policy, based on bad knowledge and/or NO knowledge, you wouldn't hesitate to critisize that policy.

Your opinion is not unlike a person walking into a doctors office with some sort of ailment, then refusing to let the doctor know what's wrong. And then expecting that doctor to fix what's wrong and not make any mistakes.

So if there were term limits on congressmen, you'd forgo the backwards thinking and let the people who control our economic destiny have the information they need to make EDUCATED decisions?

I didn't think so....

I filled out the paper that I believed they did not need to the best of my knowledge so what you complaining about but what I do does nothing to help others since I also do not ask for any thing from the USDA but they sure are asking me for things they should not have a reason to ask for

You might want to learn to comprehend what you read. I'm NOT complaining here. YOU are. I'm wanting to use KNOWLEDGE to make informed decisions. YOU want to play games and force government officials to sort through poor, misleading information and make decisions without allowing any mistakes. YOU keep deflecting the REAL issue of this thread in favor of voicing your objections to the reality of life. It is what it is....YOU want what you cannot have because of you don't want to come out of your cave and live in the real world. But that's not happening either. If you didn't have anything to whine about, you'd whine about THAT.

WRONG I am just one who thinks that there is no reason for the gov to be asking stupid things about what I do which in turn cost the gov more $$. As I said I did fill it out and mail it in and answered it the best I could so what the heck are you hammering me for I just do not agree with the census but I still did what they asked me to

So when the climate changes, which has happend numberous times, it is a left wing - right wing issue? Interesting. So I guess if you vote nnalert then the climate does not change and if you vote Democrate climate does change? Please explain since I have more of a scientific background than political.

I saw that also, I could not believe what he was saying, I still do not understand totally where he was coming from.

Most questionaires like the ag cencus use information that seems relatively meaningless to some to "profile" the subjects being quizzed. They use statistical information such as approximate value of your equipment along with acreage farmed, estimated value of crops raised, ect, to determine what "average" is. It's not so much their being interested in the value of your equipment as it is just how you fit in the grand scheme of things. Most employers have questions on their applications that do the same end. It's almost ridiculous to think the government is concerned about how much you paid for your latest tractor. Do you suppose that's critical information as to US farm policy? NOPE! They just want a better picture of where you fit in the big picture, and just how your locale stacks up against farms and farmers in other parts of the country.

I doubt seriously any major policy will hinge upon how much I paid for my used hay rake, nor is there someone sitting in a dark office in the basement of the Capital building who needs to know specifically how much I have invested in my old combine. They just need generalizations and averages to reach INFORMED EDUCATED desicions rather than just guessing.

Before this gets poofed again, I have to say that I agree with you and what you are saying. I have filled a bunch of these out in the last few years, the majority of whitch pertained to organic farming. I too am very hopeful that It can be used as a tool to improve farming for us smaller farmers as well as the corperate farms, who I might add, have taken full well the advantage of every farm program that has came down the pike.. I do not blame them for this, just because they pulled their heads out of the sand and saw what they could take advantage of.

Just curious, why did that bother you? If they want to know about my junky old equipment, I do not mind at all. The main reason I do not mind telling them is I really do not think they have a real clue as to how much money it costs us in equipment from year to year..If it is a tax thing that some of you are worried about, I can assure you that the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.

Your oh so wrong. I filled it out as best I could and called them to be sure I did it as well as I could. I have always been taught to question things and when it comes to just blindly letting the government do as they please with out asking questions is why thing in DC have gotten to where the are today. And no I was not whining you the one I see here doing the bitching

So My friend, Who keeps voting these buzzards[either party] back in? We have term limits every election....

That too is part of the problem people do not seem to have the knowledge that people in offcie should be there to work for the people and those who have been there 50 years are no longer in touch with what is going on. Those who make a carrier as a polition should be put out but few see that to be as it should

I'm not an apraiser. We don't have personal property tax on farm equipment here in Michigan so I don't have any kind of assessment to go on. I'm not going to hire an apraiser or sit here for hours trying to figure out what I have or what it's worth. I was pizzed off enough just having to fill out yet another bunch of government paperwork anyway, and after figuring out acres, yields, all that crap,I was at the end of my rope.
No different to me than the regular census when they get beyond number of people, gender and age. That's all they're getting from me.

Really...Seriously....You need to google the words "reading comprehention skills", then try to apply them to everyday life. (Not to mention sentence structure that looks like that of a 7-year old!) ALL you do is whine and b!tch about everything. I'm the one who doesn't have anger issues with the government. You obviously do. And yet you think YOU have all the answers. Now reply again! This is entertaining!

At last! Someone gets it! While the current programs may not be ideal, they are what we have and they are our "reality". And even if the government doesn't get their end right, it's anything but helpful for us on the other end to deliberately withhold information that creates a further log jam. Two wrongs don't make a right.

People who fight the system are bound to fail. Swim with the current and it's a lot less trouble.

Ya seems people do not like when people do not like filling out stuff for the gov that they need not know LOL

"People who fight the system are bound to fail. Swim with the current and it's a lot less trouble."

The current just don't happen to be where I am going. I prefer to go where I want to go. I may not get there but bydamn I'll know I tried and just didn't float down the stream taking the easy way out.
