Sometime in the spring you will find seed potatoes at a lot of hardware stores, grocery stores, farm stores (like the Andersons), and a few feed mills. They will usually start appearing when it's close to time to plant.
Location isn't much of a factor for what varieties, but it's more about when to plant.
Cut the seed potatoes so that you have 3 eyes per piece, then plant. Some folks will let them sit for a day before planting but my folks never did and we don't either.
We have always planted using straw or hay instead of burying them in the ground. It works well for us.
Cover the potatoes with a good 8 inches of mulch and keep an eye on things and add more as needed.
Then next year the mulch will be broken down nice and till in easy to add organic matter to your garden.

i've never heard of mulching them in rather than covering with soil, but i like the idea of it. what is the thought behind that? easier to dig them up when they're ready?

So I will need some mulch along with the straw/hay.I have a horse barn so I have plenty of fertilizer. We bed with hard wood shaving, so when it composts it makes good soil.I may have some leaves brought in also.

Thanks for the INFO.Have made a seed list,
( about 20 vegies) of what I would like to plant. Now I need to see what is good for my area.

most veggies don't care where they are. We plant the same varieties in WI that the folks did in Ohio.
The big difference is when you plant them.
Some onions prefer to be planted south and some north but if you use oion sets bought locally you should be OK.

I plant in raised rows and get the starts from local farm store. If it's really wet use sulphur to help prevent rot on cut potatoes. If your ground is loose enough, use a pitchfork in the spring to dig up plant, pick off potatoes and replant it.
