Sometime in the spring you will find seed potatoes at a lot of hardware stores, grocery stores, farm stores (like the Andersons), and a few feed mills. They will usually start appearing when it's close to time to plant.
Location isn't much of a factor for what varieties, but it's more about when to plant.
Cut the seed potatoes so that you have 3 eyes per piece, then plant. Some folks will let them sit for a day before planting but my folks never did and we don't either.
We have always planted using straw or hay instead of burying them in the ground. It works well for us.
Cover the potatoes with a good 8 inches of mulch and keep an eye on things and add more as needed.
Then next year the mulch will be broken down nice and till in easy to add organic matter to your garden. |

| i've never heard of mulching them in rather than covering with soil, but i like the idea of it. what is the thought behind that? easier to dig them up when they're ready? |
