Storing corn question

moisture is running 12.5-13.8, mostly in 12.s. Can I safely put some of this corn in a bin that has cement floor, no air fans. Bins are 1800-2200 bu capacity. Grain would be stored from now until JAN-FED-MAR time frame. Storage fee's at elevator are 3-5 cents per bushel per month, with a load out charge of 12- 15 cents a bushel. wold rather store what I can.

Yep should be just fine.

I would be careful not to put any in on a 80 degree day. On coller days it should be fine.

One thing that really helps a lot is to get one of those screw in tube fans and run it for a couple of days in december when it is cool out or even feezing.

Weather has been cool at night, is it better to harvest at night in the 30's low 40's and put in the bin cold? I would say other wise I am looking at 50-60 degree days. Would be nice, have to bins next door I can use, mine are full of beans.

There is a risk in doing anything, but it should work out for you fine. A bigger bin you'd have to worry about getting it cooled down; but smaller bins like that should be just fine 99% of the time. At those moisture levels, the temps shouldn't be a problem.

One key is to watch the fines down the middle of the bin, if you feed out of the bin and get the grain moving a bit always helps.

50 - 60 degree days should be ok, the bins are fairly small, and that helps too... the danger is hot days (those 90 degree days of a month ago) then the grain can spoil. We sometimes put a piece of rebar into the bin, through the door and another in through the roof lid and leave them there for a few days, pull them out and see if they are warm to the touch.. if you want to be fancy tape a thermometer to the rebar and read a temperature. If the grain is too warm for your liking auger a load out and put it back into the bin, do that on a cool day and you will cool the grain down.

Thta's what we do here in bins with no fan... oj in Manitoba
