How long should I put steers on grain, corn.soy bean meal.I only put a few in a pen when customers start asking for halves. Also put in a round bale of hay.Just called butcher and first opening is dec.19.I will fill the steer stuffer but will not put in the steer until later

For me, the feeding period depends on the live weight entering the feedyard and finish weight needed to produce the carcass the buyers want. 90 days to slaughter is not a very long time, especially if you have to start your cattle on feed, get them up to full feed and get them in finished condition.

well,it depends on several things such as type of cattle, what your customers want etc.but for fully finished beef 90-110 day is about what most do here. For grass fed beef, coming right off the range,10 or so days in a pen will get any taste out of them that was caused by their pasture. if you ever finish out a heifer, they tend to put on more fat than beef after they reach 900 or so pounds so you dont want to hold those too long or your just making fat. feed costs too much to make fat thats going to trimmed anyway.
