about 200 acres of western okla range land this weekend,with a 48 8n and a model 100 ih 7ft sycle mower.I definitly need a need a new shock on my seat.i think ive shortened my spine a couple of inches! good thing is tractor and mower never missed a lick other than breaking one hieght adjuster chain. maybe if it rains some now i can get ahead of the broomweed.
 
Holy Cow! If you worked ten hours a day, you averaged 10 acres per hour! You had to be wide open in third gear. I learned to mow with 8N/7ft in the late 40's & early 50's but I had to go at PTO speed in second gear and five acres was not quite ever achieved, if memory serves.
Hard seat didn't bother us youngsters then, but have been payin' for it a long time now. (Still have an 8N, but with fancy seat)
 
three days,fri-sun,part of a fourth.about 3/4 throttle in high range second gear, as soon as i could see,till i couldnt tell where i was with the lights.long days for sure.didnt have to turn much though so that made it go faster,flat ground just rough from the bunch grass.probably could have ran in third if i could have hung on!stopped to fuel up,grease mower,eat and get a little sleep.if i remember correctly i fueled up four times,burning a little less than a gallon an hour.and it started cutting out when i rolled in barn on the fourth tank so about five acres an hour i figure. I bet i have either a new shock on this knoedler seat or a new seat system before i do it again though! spraying is a WHOLE lot faster,but its still too hot here for spray to do much good.supposed to cool off next week,so im hoping the grass will come on a little before winter.been so dry that a lot of the native grass is just now greening up a little.
 
Lots of 8N's have a Sherman (or Hupp) add-on transmission that make 8 speed or 12 speed N's. They are nice to have in some situations, but I never had the need for one.
 
mowing is the only time ive used mine. have a creeper transmission in a 2n, might be good for running a trencher or the like but i dont use it very often.
 
thats true,thats why im using a 7ft sycle instead of my 5 ft brushhog. but i dont have a 9 footer. so dry here that native grass never even greened up this year yet. normally i wouldnt mow this stuff, but im experimenting to see if i cut the broom weed and snake weed down,if the drought will help set it back also and if or when we do get some rain the grass may get a jump on it.spraying would be faster ,and cheaper most times,but its so hot that spraying wont do much good now. And broomweed and snake weed is just starting to bloom so waiting for cool enough weather after it blooms and sets seed wouldnt do any good whatsoever.I havent sprayed enough to know if spraying this old native grass when its this stressed would do,but normaly it sets it back pretty good,so i decided mowing would be the way to go.may help ,may not, but it sure LOOKS better, and i may save a little water for the grass.
