Feeding Out Steers with Corn Screenings

Hello, With corn prices still on the rise feeding out our steers is getting expensive quickly. The local elevators have corn screenings and sell them on average 30% below the market price. I've heard several times, that because most of the corn is cracked that mold can be a problem? I was wondering if anyone feeds their steers screenings and have had any problems with them molding? Also i was thinking of grinding some hay with the hammer mill to mix in with the screenings? Any tips or suggestions? Thanks

The mold i heard of several times is mycotoxins such as vomitoxin? Hayray when you where feeding screenings did you feed them as full feed or part of a mixed percentage? Thanks

I fed the screenings as a full feed. I took into account the TDN of the screenings as compared to shelled corn and adjusted the volume I fed accordingly. Those problems with toxins do happen also in shelled/cracked/ground corn also. The safest thing to do is have the batch tested, I did it once and was fine and then other times I have fed some pretty moldy looking stuff and was fine. Rare, but testing does give you a piece of mind.

There is a local mill here and the owner has made a good living for many years hauling screenings from Indiana and blending them with soy and molasses to make a mixed complete feed.
