Corn is a high energy feed, if you are fattening livestock you can subsitute one high energy feed for another and have close to the same results, such as barley for corn, oats or wheat for corn etc. but you cannot subsitute a roughage for a high energy concentrate and get the same result in the same length of time. In other words, if you want to fatten the steers for sale or slaughter it is either going to cost more this year or take a lot longer to do it which also costs more, in general, cattle feeding above home use scale does not pay off unless you are growing your own corn, all a cattle feeder is doing is selling his grain on the hoof instead of by the bushel.
