2nd cut done and just like last year, I pulled the trailer in the barn and my Grandaughter backed the baler in and we immediatly got 3/4" rain! Different from last year....got 98 sm. squares off 27 acres!!! I cut it all and raked almost all of it to try to get the weeds. Actually, if it were"nt for queen anns lace and a varity of other "wild beauties" my yeild would have probably been 50% less!!
Working in this heat and dry the last 4 days and being exactly one month from 70...I"m starting to think that tractorcades might be more fun than making hay anymore!!!

Wow Larry, I didn't realize you had that much "experience". I think I'd consider letting the granddaughter do "all" of it and you just sit and watch and maybe have a beer or two. Congratulations on those 70 years. I"m not too far behind you.

Well Randillan....the good thing about getting old is that ...YOU ARE!, since there is only one alternative!!!

saw a ad for hay here last week,, weed hay $35 a bale.. i guess one mans weeds is another mans hay! the weeds have taken over a lot of pastures the last couple of years here, mine included.folks have sold a lot of cattle that kept a lot of them eaten down because they are out of water.

Old ??? I keep saying you are only as old as you feel. One guy I know is building a retaining wall at a young 89. Him and his retired son (late 60's). Had me haul the gravel and sand for them to mix concrete, I looked at him and said I'll try to get my mortar mixer up here for you to use maybe it will be easier using it, maybe not but here it is.

Oddly enough my hay has far exceeded my expectations. Have some alfalfa in a small creek bottom in the woods and can barely tell it's in a drought. On the upside have not had trouble getting it up dry. Not so much on everything else though.

This year I'm cutting everything I can get. I did one field that I never mowed before, only grazed and brush hogged. Made 8 weedy, stemmy 800 lbs round bales. There are sticks to be seen poking out of the sides! I already had 2 guys tell me not to burn them because this winter they will be good for bedding if nothing else and even bedding bales are $20.00.

It all feeds out better than snow flakes and a cold wind!

It has never been this dry in my life 66 yrs. Our County corn average is pegged at 28 bu. We are baling everything in sight, including some crp. We got 125 4X5 round bales from 40 acres. A lot of weeds, but some brown grass. Baled it the same day we mowed it. I just mow 10 to 15 acres a day. Sold it all to neighbors for $25. They are glad to get it.

We have a lot of wet meadows up here in Northern NY that grow nothing but Reed Canary Grass. Not bad feed if you get it young, but it's too wet to get to most of it before late June most years. My neighbor has access to several hundred, dead flat, rock free, acres and makes large round bedding bales. Every winter he complains because for all the work and $$$ he put;s into corn and sorghum and hay and boughten feed, as soon as the grinder start spitting out that Canary grass the cows leave the other stuff and start chomping down their bedding!
