How bad is a chipped corner on a gear? is this a must fix? the tractor is not used heavily maybe 50 hours a year doing hay work

in my opinion ,if it has most of the gears contact point (90%) still there you likely be ok.Just make sure there are no hair line cracks accross other places in the gear. I drove a old grain truck for years that had about half a gear gone on the pinion. in fact i never knew it was broken until i had to put axle seal in.seen it was chipped then ,and drove it for another ten years or so. replacing it would be best of course but sometimes youve just got to get along with what you have .

Hard to say with the lack of info. Depends in what gear it is and where it is and what tractor it is on. If in the engine that could mean a blown engine if in the transmission and a gear you do not use no big deal.
