Spraying beans (video) + pair of pics

Short clip of fungicide/insecticide test plot I sprayed late yesterday. Keep hearing stories of good yield gains with this so I tried it on a 20 acre patch. I also put down growth hormone with my last pass of roundup last week on an additional 65 acres, and the rest I'm just leaving to their own devices. Be interesting to compare.

Fungicide/Insecticide Spraying Video

There are a lot of folks spraying in the high teens... I can spray up to 13mph but I don't like to do it. It's too much to keep up with too fast. 8 is plenty fast for me.

We are "small timers" without automated equipment and can't afford to keep up with the times. You have more beans in that video than we raise in total, 25 acres. We have been extremely fortunate this year in getting the rains at the right times as our corn is made and the beans look super. Wheat wasn't as good and we sold way too low compared to todays price.

I'm amongst the "small timers" myself. I work a "real" job, but I work 12's so I only work 4 days one week, 3 the next, days/nights swings and every 5 weeks I'm off for 15 days. When it times out right I can be in the field and forget I have any other job. I don't use autosteer, I picked up a used Raven Cruizer for GPS guidance because I couldn't see my foam marker well in between rows prior to canopy, and I wasn't aware if I missed a spot. I still do the driving, but the GPS tells me when I'm finished if I missed something worth going back after. Lots of point rows in irregular fields = lots of room for misses when you're trying to limit your overspray. My Spra Coupe had a 50 foot boom, I cut it down to 45 this year to make it cover 18 rows as I plant with a 6 row and 18 are my usual end rows. I don't use the GPS on the planter, just markers, but picked up some ground late this year that I had to no-till and wished I had it on there then. Hope to not have to no-till any next year, if I do I will probably try the GPS along with markers on that. The rains didn't come this year for us on the corn, enough to prevent a total loss, I will have some small pieces do 160 or better but there will be plenty of double-digit corn yield. I think the rains hit the beans right, getting one right now, and they should be good-excellent. First year in awhile I've not contracted any, with this market whatever I get when I sell them will be more than anything I could have contracted for at my normal time. I will store all I have bin space for until Jan. and sell the rest out of the field on the spot. Have 120 acres of beans this year and just under 150 of corn.

Nice looking beans. I have gone back to planting most of mine in 30" rows. Haven't seen much yield change, use less beans and have the option to cultivate out the resistant weeds. Again, nice looking crop. Dale

Are you back to 30" from 15". After this dry year 15" looks real attractive to me. No variety I planted this year canopied in a decent timeframe, some still aren't. I have had to spray several places three times due to lack of canopy.
