Picked up chicken feed today and it was up by $10 from last month. Was told corn prices had jumped about $2.50 a bag and is not over $10.95 a bag. Guess this drought will be felt for a long time

Been the topic of every farmer since May already..... Where you been? :) Corn is pretty much past old news.

Now the talk has turned to soybeans - will they recover with any late rains or are they also toasted? And that will be your protien suppliment costs....

I noticed the exact same thing today. Our feed only went up by $3 a bag - layer, chick starter, and broiler. I guess I better up the price of my broilers for the next batch.

Ah but last month my feed cost me $36 for what I get and this month it was $10 more so I did not see the higher cost till now so guess what has been talked about where you are was not felt here till now. Had a friend here today that said the same thing I have that last month not up but sure as heck it now

I'm surprised those who buy grains and depend on that are not keeping abreast of such things and pre-pay at the lower prices.

Farming is turning into a real full time job, with figuring out when to lock in grain prices for sale, when to lock in fertilizer, fuel, seed, and pesticide costs.

All such are going up & down so wildly the past 3 years, and getting an even wilder ride this year, one really has to stay on top of things!

Just sold 2000 bu of corn for this October's delivery - new crop - for $7.75 today. Strange time to be locking in a fall price, and by then corn might be $2 higher.... But it could be $2 lower.

Glad stuff like that doesn't bother me too much, could be hard to sleep if it did. :)

Depends what service you subscribe to. Basic DTN is 10 minutes behind CBOT futures, but for the extra fee you can get real-time market quotes. With today"s volatile markets, easily moves 30-50 cents in a mater of minutes. These days, trading an hour late can get real expensive. Few weeks ago, I checked the local internet posted price, drove 5 miles to town, contracted for more than a dime under on soybeans....went to a Legion meeting that nite, and a neighbor who was in the elevator when I contracted said market recovered a dime a half hour after I left. Still, $14.22 for beans on that contract is not shabby. Last year I put in bids and averaged $13.35 for the year.
