Fungus???? What is this??

I found this in my Garden this evening.This is sweet corn {Peaches and Cream}.Can anybody tell me what this is and what might have cause this?

Yes- late 70s there was a field corn company from SD that had big sellers here. (Sokota?) 1-2 years of corn smut.....ruined their market here. Haven"t seen them since.

Smut.

In some countries it is a delacacy of some sort, or so I hear.

Happens to field corn when there are certain stresses on the corn.

the Mexicans call it huitlacoche. if you like mushrooms, pull it off the cob and saute it with some olive oil and garlic.

A seed born disease.Burn any ears that have it.Usually comes from field corn.
