was asked by a local organic veggie grower to do some brush clearing/bushhogging, on a small parcel thats been overgrown. i had planned to spray w/ roundup to kill some of the grasses and weeds so i could see any obstacles when bush hogging, but they said no because they're growing organic and can't use chemicals. does anyone know if they make an organic version of roundup or a generic organic version?

Grandpa used matches. Real organic and sweetens the soil.

Might eliminate the need for the cutter too.

Only if you want to spend a lot of money.

20% acetic acid vinegar (supermarket vinegar is 5%) is one.

D-limonene which is an extract from citrus (peels I believe) is another. I'm including a link below to Nature's Avenger which uses it -- at $150 for 2-1/2 gallons, which is only mixed at a 4:1 ratio, and I suspect is used at a much higher rate of application then RoundUp. (D-limonene works by stripping the wax off the plants, so they dry out).

Not approved for organic certification.

Just because something is "natural" does not mean it's allowed under the USDA standards that regulate the use of the term "organic" for trade.

What is approved does change from time to time. A couple years ago the use of Nicotine as a pesticide was removed (even though it's perfectly natural -- it's just a tea made from tobacco plants).

Farms with sales > $5,000 are to be certified by an outside agency as complying with the National Organic Program standards; farms under $5,000 are to self-certify if they use the term.

Glyphosate (Roundup) travels through a green plant & kills it from the roots up.

That's pretty special, esp for perannual weeds like Canadian thistle, etc with big roots.

Nothing from the organic folks comes close. They use salt to poison the ground, or vinigaer to again poison & affect the ph of soil. Or boiling water or propane burners to cook the vegitation on the surface - but not affect the roots any.

You won't find anything for what you want to do.
