just finished up my 1st cut hay last sat. i don't really do too much, i mostly do a bunch of smaller fields and about 10ac on my familys farm. we usually put up just about 1000 bales for 1st cut. this yr we got some really nice hay put up in early june, since the weather turned warm fast this spring and the hay took off growing right after i fertilized. the hay i just put in last sat was a bit past prime as the top was kind brown but the underneath was nice and green. i still see some local guys trying to get their 1st cut done but most of their fields are way past prime the tops are all browned out.

Jim,
We finished up first crop here in southern NH this past week as well! We've also done one small batch of second crop. We also do about the same volume as you.

Edit: What are you using for equipment?

sorry about the late reply sheepdog as i have been in bc on honeymoon. i have some old haying eq that has been in my family for many yrs. we cut w/ a jd50 and #8 sickle, sometimes in a heavy stand on 1st cut i will run a nh404 crusher w/ our old jd2010. i have a newer sitrex tedder, and an old nh55 rake those are usually run w/ my jd790 which is excellent on fuel, or the jd2010. i bale w/ the old 2010 and our 24t baler. w/ the older eq i have you just need to slow down and take it easy and realize that going fast w/ it will just cause headaches. since my dad has retired from his reg. job he is purchasing a newer ~60hp 4x4 utility tractor w/ loader to replace the old jd2010, and i'm hoping to pick up a good used 7ft haybine, as we will be picking up a couple more smaller fields for next yr.

Well, I got my equipment upgraded while I was still doing considerable more acreage than at present, but the good thing is that I should never have to upgrade again! Heres the list:
5610 Ford tractor
3910 Ford tractor
408 New Holland discbine
GF5001MH Kuhn tedder
GA300GM Kuhn rake
570 New Holland baler with thrower
4 - kicker wagons
Only thing lacking is ambition & round tuits

Edit: Did you say "Honeymoon"? Congratulations, and wishing you both many years of happiness!

thanks. yes i said honeymoon, we even got a picture at our wedding on a jd tractor and some round bales, i'm sure the people who can see that picture on our photographers web site think we're just a bunch of hillbillies, i really don't care though i just love farming and thats the way it is. anyway wish i had the eq you have, looks like a nice setup. 1 of our neighbors has a 5610 nice machine hows it handle that discbine? i've been looking for a rotary rake like your kuhn i have heard the rotary's are the way to go,is yours a tow or 3pt model?

The rake is 3 point hitch. Here's a picture of it on the 3910, with the 5610 and baler in the background.

Most of my pictures of interest are in the various YT photo galleries! Just go over to the left of this page, scroll down to "Galleries", click on any one of them, and when it opens, scroll down to the search box, and type in Shetland Sheepdog, then click on Go! my pictures will come up. I don't use photobucket, or any other on line photo storage.
