Will this work?

One of my alfalfa fields is in it's 7th. year and starting to get some weeds in it.
Can I broadcast this field early this spring with brome seed (without spraying the alfalfa), and hope for a good stand of brome?

If it germinates, yes. Brome is a pretty big seed though. I'd be concerned that if it wasn't covered it wouldn't.

its gonna depend all on seed to soil contact. It might work with a freeze/thaw day. Have you thought about no-tilling it in. As for spraying alfalfa, its hard to kill all the way. Youre almost always better off to plow it under if you want a complete kill.

I don't have access to no-till equipment, but I would be happy to get a good mix of alfalfa and brome grass off this field.
If in the proceeding years the brome over takes the alfalfa, then that is fine too.
My primary concern is to get something going that will choke out the weeds that are trying to take over the field now,... and to do it with a minimum of tillage.

What about broadcasting, then going in with a stiff harrow (spring tooth???)or maybe a packer when the ground is still a bit soft (not too much though, don't want ruts)and before the alfalfa has much of any growth on it to work the seed in a bit??

I would say if youre alright with a mix then youre gonna be fine. It's amazing how sometimes things just work even when monsanto and the extension office says it wont. Ive had an alfalfa/grass field for 8 years without fertilizer and I just cant see why I would put money into it when the soil is fine and probably better off then when I seeded it and it is nearly pure profit minus fuel and twine. It feeds my livestock all winter and leaves me enough to sell.
