Pre Cut Rye Straw

For a variety of reasons I have planted a 3 acre patch of winter Rye to try producing precut Rye straw. Has anyone done this? Any pointers?

What's precut rye straw? Sounds 'fancy', must be a horse person thing?

I am not a horse person but I am hoping to sell to that market. Pre Cut straw is a small grain that is cut after heading but before going to seed. Then letting the straw bleach out. I guess it makes a real pretty and long straw since it has not gone through the combine.

Because of my limited equipment this would work great for me, but I have never done before.

I am trying 3 acres now and will see how it goes.

same as making hay, except it will probly take 6-10 days to dry out at least in the northeast, one upside is rain does nt bother it much it even seems to help it bleach out, though if you get a week or two of crumy weather it can get awfull brown and dusty, but generly it comes out a buetiful golden color.

i've done it a few years now. works well in the veg rotation- plant about now, when the veggies are done, makes lots of organic matter in the spring, then get it off and till before planting late spring veg next year. Here (SE NY) figure on mowing the last week in May, let it dry for a week or 2 depending on weather. we use it all on the farm for mulching the vegetables. if a good stand of rye, there's no weeds or any seeds.

Thanks - funny, around here folks would rake the straw, run over it with a stalk chopper, and rake it again, so it _does_ break up & bend to be a better absorbing straw. The long stemmed stuff just doesn't absorb. But here is a dairy/ hogs/ farming stuff, things need to work, not look good.

I don't meant that quite as mean as it sounds, I've been having a real long day.

Good for finding a market & trying to fill it, that's what farming is about - make what the customer wants.
