Spraying sweet corn revisited

I’m new to having to figure out good spraying practices. Growing up on the farm Dad all ways did the mixing and scheduling I was jest told go do.
Mudcat you mentioned spraying sweet corn 5 time in 7 days in the earlier post with what ever you are using. What kind of spry weight per acre are you talking about say using warrior and do you recommend keeping the mix rate the same for all the sprayings or tapering of as you go/ I guess I was thinking that using a wetting agent and spraying that much would cause a heavy build up.
And I guess that would be for Indian corn also??

Nope Larry, You will not get a buildup! The stuff that the people in power let us use these days doesn't last long, Kills and then goes away, that is why the 3 days in a row at tassel. So that you can be sure to kill Mr worm as the tassel pushes him out to the surface. When I was growing Sweet corn Big time I used Lannate and later Lannate LV. sometimes when we had a big infestation we would have gandy or noble hoppers mounted on out rolling culltivators and put Lannate granules down in the bud as we laid our corn by.

Footnote: We were spraying by air and putting 3 gallons of water+ chemical to the acre. for gardens or spraying with a ground rig you can put more water per acre on the corn and get a better kill. For my sweet corn growing in the garden now I use a backpack sprayer and the spray gets down in the bud and does the job! I also have a small duster and use 10% sevin dust

Thanks Mudcat for sharing that.
I will be using a three point boom sprayer that I have modified so the boom can be pinned in several heights plus added a wand on a 25 foot hose
I will probable plant the corn next year like I did the pumpkins and gords this year skipping a space every 6 rows so I can drive the 2 N down between them and spray with out running over the vines.

So is the idea sevin dust mixed in with the mineral oil? Or a liquid sevin? I'm just seeing my first silks, and this is the first year I've grown corn. My neighbor says vinegar on the silks works too??

Thanks, Ben

Sevin 10% dust sticks to the silk and keeps mr worm out. Back in the day before we had some of the chemicals we have today, we used to dust sweet corn as soon as it started to tassel, we dusted on a every other day rotation. We used DDT and got good control. I dusted so much corn with DDT as a teenager, I guess I got a lot of it in me. We always dusted at night. As Larry said we would have twelve rows and then a spray alley, that way the sprayer/duster did 6 rows at a time on each side of alley!
