Really short version: I ground off the rivets and replaced the head on the new bar with the head off the old one, which worked better, but was still jumping off. Finally found a U-bolt and bolted it up over the clasp, which worked great.
Until the drive plate at the other end of the pitman broke in half...

The Lord is trying to learn me something here...
Thankfully (really!), my neighbor has a Hesston 6400 self-propelled haybine, and he wasn't using it this evening, so I was able to borrow it and get the hay down, so I can continue working on the sickle at my "leisure."
Thanks for the suggestions... I don't expect anyone to give me a three-step plan to fix these kinds of problems, but often, someone might have had a similar experience that can trigger an idea for a fix (using the U-bolt was such an example).
