Crop Rotation?

HI, This my second year of farming, very small, just crops. Last year I had winter wheat planted. In the fall I plowed it. This spring I planted oats in the same field. I fertilized according to the analysis. The oats is hardly coming up! We did have alot of rain and like everyone else alot of cold weather. Is it the weather? Or is there something about the rotation? I live near Green Bay, Wi. The oats was 1 year off certified. I do not know if it is worth spraying?

Not an expert on oats by any means, BUT, it sounds like you saved your seed back, did you do a germination test to see how many would grow? Got any seed left over that you could check? I always thought oats were an early crop that cold didn't bother. Perhaps you planted them too deep?

Yep, I did a germination test, and got about 90%. I planted about 3 1/2 bu. to the acre. This was a used drill, but the last thing planted was oats & Peas. Maybe 2-2 1/2" deep. I can not understand! Thanks

Never planted oats after wheat, but always plant winter wheat after oats. A few years back when I had a wheat disaster I was talking with all the local experts and asked about oats- wheat rotation. Interestingly the disease guy said that was a good rotation as the disease pressure was different! Go figure! Both small grains!
The worst germination disaster I ever had was oats that got pounded right after planting. Fortunately it was a very small field. I"ve often heard it said oats like it cold and wet. NOT HERE.(central NY) Cool and damp maybe. I assume the seed was not treated. It would be interesting to know if that would have helped.

did the ground crust over bad with all the rain?sometimes they just cant push through the crust.I've had to take the drill set real shallow and drag it over the fields to break crust before.if it crusts over hard enough seed will rot sometimes.I would dig up some by hand and see whats going on.if its rotting aint much you can do.except replant.but breaking the crust if any will help.are you sure you didnt get your fertilizer too close to seed ?if you put it down with drill that is.

Im also in WI and some of my oats didnt come up very well. Mostly the low spots that had water standing after the rains we had early in May. The higher ground looks great. I planted april 18th.

general rule of thumb-- plant your seed 2 1/2 times as deep as the diameter of the seed-- so grain and grass get planted very shallow-- 1/2 inch or so-- you can move up or down depending on weather ( moisture and temps) oats tend to get planted when soil is cool and damp-- wheat when its warmer and most of us depend on fall rains to bring it up-- tho wet summer will provide enough moisture to cause it to germinate

When I planted I had the drill set at the shallowest I could possibly be. Which was about 2-2/12 inches. This a John Deere drill and quite old, but in great shape. I would like to know what to do to plant shallower! Maybe lift the drawbar of the tractor! I have a 300u with fasthitch. I know it was to deep, but I don t know how to correct this. Thanks adrian
